It seems that every year holiday decorations appear in the store earlier than the year before. I’ve noticed the same trend with prediction posts. I saw a few in early November this year; I imagine next year we might see some as a precursor to Halloween. Personally, I prefer to savor everything in its own time. I caution our neighbors that they can put up the lights early but they shouldn’t turn them on until December starts. Our Christmas tree doesn’t go up until after Thanksgiving, and I don’t post my next year’s technology predictions while I’m still digesting pumpkin pie.
But now that it is the season, I hope you’ll take a few moments to digest my predictions article on NetworkWorld. I promise that the tryptophan won’t kick in until after you’ve finished reading. This year I focused on network and security trends that I believe are probable for 2017. While there is a lot going on in the world of Information Technology, these two areas have been the focus of quite a bit of innovation in 2016.
Cloud computing continues to gain mainstream traction, while more enterprises are starting to deploy IPv6 and exploring Software Defined Networking (SDN). The Internet of Things (IoT) is also starting to take on more significance, and will have widespread implications on both networking and security.
On the other hand, hackers are applying ever more innovative techniques to robust malware exploits that are challenging even the most sophisticated anti-virus and enterprise security programs. 2016 has seen a number of serious breaches, and I’m afraid we may see even more in 2017.
