The room was filled with positive energy this past Saturday in the Tivoli building on the campus of Metropolitan State University of Denver. Hundreds of volunteers anxiously waited to begin packaging food for people all around the world on behalf of Food for Thought Denver and Stop Hunger Now. Having had little exposure to either of these organizations, I was curious and excited to learn about the local and global missions of these non-profits, and to lend a helping hand.

Every year GTRI employees get one day of volunteer time off (VTO) to support a non-profit of their choice. Last Saturday, five GTRI team members gave their time at this GTRI sponsored community service event. Appropriately titled “Rock-A-Belly,” live music motivated the volunteers to pack 100,000 meals in less than five hours.

Simple processes paired with close-knit teamwork was GTRI’s recipe for success. GTRI’s team never quit, not taking a single break until the task at hand was accomplished. Music from a local high school band out of Golden kept spirits high as the packaging continued.

These events wouldn’t be possible without the support of the local community, from individual sponsors to corporate sponsors like GTRI; the time and monetary donations at the Rock-A-Belly festival right here in Denver will have a global impact. It makes me proud to be an employee of a company that demonstrates a responsibility to the community, and to work with people who know how to have fun.

Generosity is rarely rewarded to the extent it was on Saturday. After the work was finished the party really started. Local eateries provided food and beverages and the live music didn’t stop until well after the sun went down.GTRI Rock-A-Belly team
