Every holiday season, GTRI looks forward to participating in Cisco’s “Santa Connection.” This special program provides a dose of Christmas cheer to children in the hospital. Using Cisco collaboration tools, Santa Claus makes virtual visits to approximately 50 hospitals throughout North America, including Children’s Hospital Colorado located in Denver. Young patients are able to see and talk to Santa during a live feed from the “North Pole.”
Two key Cisco technologies enable Santa’s virtual visit:
- Cisco Jabber allows children using a web-enabled camera (such as on an iPad or laptop) to connect with Santa remotely via video.
- Cisco TelePresence and TelePresence mobile carts provide a high definition video connection directly to the North Pole.
The result is that many children who might not otherwise be able to see Santa will be able to speak with him in real time and share their Christmas wishes. As Cisco says (and we agree): What a great way to show how technology can be used to improve lives!
Santa will visit Children’s Hospital Colorado today, December 16. In addition to the virtual visit from the North Pole, he’ll visit certain floors in person and will leave a fleece blanket for every child. Santa’s assistants this year include Laura Cronin and Greg Byles from GTRI, who are dedicating their Volunteer Time Off (VTO) time to this event.
