Several years ago I decided it would be fun to try something new and take the starting line at a local mountain bike race. I had no idea what I was getting into, but after the race, I was hooked. It was exciting, challenging, painful, and fun all wrapped into one event. The first race also proved I had a lot to learn as I finished mid pack in the citizen category.

Bike RiderToday I am a competitive Expert Endurance racer. But to get there, I had to analyze how and where I could improve. I read about how to improve my diet so that I could fuel properly for training and racing. I practiced riding different types of terrain, worked on my climbing, and chased after people on descents. I increased my riding to improve my endurance and power, but also learned to focus on recovery so that I could gain as much as possible from each workout.

I approach my work at GTRI with the same perspective as I do with mountain bike racing. I continuously look at every aspect of work and see where I can improve. Can I be more efficient or more accurate? How can I help the customer more effectively? I feel that every contact I have with a customer, co-worker or reseller, regardless of how big the “opportunity” is, can affect my relationships and how successful I am.

My mentality as an athlete has me always looking to get better at whatever I am doing. I feel I must continuously look to improve at things that are new to me and things that I am good at. Fortunately, I work at a company that encourages improvement both at work and in our personal lives.
